Day-rate (guide only)
A licensed trekking guide in Pokhara costs USD $30–$35 per day for guide-only service. That covers the guide's wage and their meals/lodging on the trail. You still pay for your own teahouse, food, and permits separately.
This rate is fairly consistent across guides because Nepal's trekking association sets a recommended floor. Anything significantly under $25/day is a red flag - either an unlicensed guide or someone cutting corners on insurance.
Full-package rates (everything included)
A full package (guide + accommodation + 3 meals + permits + transport to trailhead) runs $90–$150 per day for standard teahouse trekking. The range depends on route remoteness - Annapurna Base Camp sits at the lower end, Manaslu Circuit and Upper Mustang at the higher end because of the restricted-area permit fees.
Luxury lodge treks (Ker & Downey-style) run $250–$400 per day. These are a different product entirely - heated rooms, en-suite bathrooms, gourmet meals.
The agency markup
Booking the same trek through a Kathmandu agency typically costs 20–35% more than booking direct with a Pokhara-based guide. The difference is the agency's commission, which doesn't change the quality of the trek - only the price you pay.
Direct booking also means you talk to the actual person who walks beside you. Agency bookings often assign a different guide on day one - someone you've never spoken to.
Tipping (separate from the rate)
Customary, not mandatory. Standard guideline is USD $10–$15 per day for the guide, given at the end of the trek. Add $5–$10 per day per porter. Tips are paid in cash, in USD or Nepali rupees.
