Quick facts
A half-day sunrise hike directly from Pokhara city to a forested ridge viewpoint at 1,444-1,520m with a panoramic aerial view of the Pokhara valley and the full Annapurna range.
Overview
Kahun Danda is the ridge that rises directly above Pokhara's northern suburbs — you can see it from the lakeside on a clear day, and on a clear day from the top you can see everything. The hike starts from the Yellow Bridge area near the Fulbari Army Barrack at the northern edge of the city, climbs steeply through forest for one to two hours, and reaches the Kahun Danda view tower at 1,444m. From there the entire Pokhara valley spreads out below and Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, and — on the clearest days — the distant peaks of Manaslu are all visible to the north.
I grew up in the hills around Pokhara and this ridge is one I know as well as any trail I guide. It is a completely different experience from the commercial viewpoints at Sarangkot — quieter, more forested, and the approach from below the city gives you a different perspective on how the valley sits in relation to the mountains. On a good October or November morning, with the peaks lit and the valley still in mist below, it is one of the most striking views I know of anywhere near Pokhara.
This is a genuine half-day option — most groups are back in Pokhara by mid-morning, which leaves the afternoon free for the lake, a meal, or rest before or after a longer trek. I also use Kahun Danda as a warm-up walk at the start of multi-day itineraries — it gets people moving, calibrates their pace, and gives me a read on the group's fitness before we head into the hills.
Who this trek is for
Any level of trekker — beginners, families with fit older children, experienced trekkers looking for a half-day warm-up or wind-down, and anyone in Pokhara with a morning to spare. The trail is steep enough to give a workout but short enough not to be intimidating. Also excellent for photographers wanting a sunrise cityscape-and-mountains composition that is impossible from the lakeside.
Best views & moments
- Aerial panorama of Pokhara valley, Phewa Lake, and the full Annapurna-Manaslu arc from the view tower
- Starts and finishes inside Pokhara — no transport required beyond a short tuk-tuk or walk to the trailhead
- Forested trail with no exposure to traffic or road-side trekking the entire way up
- Sunrise at the view tower — one of the best accessible sunrise spots near Pokhara
- Half-day format — finished before noon and back in time for a lakeside breakfast
Day-by-day itinerary
Route & terrain
The trail begins at the Yellow Bridge near the Fulbari Army Barrack in north Pokhara — accessible by tuk-tuk from the lakeside in fifteen to twenty minutes. Cross the bridge, pass the base of the army barrack, and enter the forested trail that climbs directly uphill. The route is a single clear path through forest — no junctions that require navigation. The Kahun view tower appears after approximately one to two hours of climbing depending on pace. The tower sits at 1,444m and is the standard turnaround point. A further twenty to thirty minutes along the ridge leads to a slightly higher clearing at approximately 1,520m. Return by the same trail.
General info
Difficulty & preparation
Rated Easy-Moderate. The trail gains around 600-700m of altitude in one to two hours — steep by any standard, but on a short and well-worn path. For trekkers accustomed to hill walking it is an easy morning. For people who do not walk regularly, the steepness on the lower section will be challenging. There is nothing technically difficult — good footwear and a reasonable pace are all that is needed. The descent can be slippery on wet mornings.
How to prepare
No preparation required beyond comfortable footwear and a torch if you are starting before dawn. Bring water — one litre is usually enough for the round trip. A light jacket for the summit if the morning is cool. Start early: the view tower fills with local walkers, early morning cyclists, and the occasional trekking group by 7-8am. A 5am start means you have the ridge largely to yourself for sunrise.
Permits you'll need
Local entry / conservation fee
NPR 100-200 (approximate — verify locally)
Kahun Danda is inside the Pokhara valley boundary and does not require ACAP or TIMS. A small local entry or conservation fee is sometimes collected at the trailhead near the army barrack. Amount is nominal and variable — carry small notes in Nepali rupees.
I handle all permit paperwork as your licensed guide.
Altitude & acclimatisation
Maximum altitude is 1,444-1,520m. There is zero AMS risk. This is well below the altitude at which any mountain sickness occurs. No altitude considerations apply to this hike. Heat and dehydration are more relevant concerns in summer months — carry enough water and start early before the midday heat builds.
Food & accommodation
There are no teahouses or food stalls on the trail itself. A few small shops or tea stalls may be open near the Yellow Bridge trailhead, particularly in the morning. Plan to carry water and a snack from your hotel. Pokhara's lakeside restaurants and cafes are all within reach on the return, making a post-hike breakfast one of the better ways to end the morning. No accommodation on the route — this is an out-and-back day hike only.
What to pack
This is a half-day urban-to-ridge hike — pack minimally. A small daypack with water, a snack, a camera, and a light jacket is all you need. Leave big luggage at your hotel. Trail runners or light hiking shoes are sufficient; mountain boots are overkill. A headtorch is useful for the pre-dawn start. Bring your phone charged — the view from the tower photographs well in the early morning light.
